Fresh From The Fjords

The Fjordhammer Weekly Listening List (13th July 2021)

Nearly Halfway Through July Already?! Is it just me or is the year starting to speed up considerably? It has been a tumultuous week and we're only two days in. With England very nearly winning the Euros on Sunday night to the confirmation that "Freedom Day" will go ahead as planned on 19th July (despite a large number of covid cases continually rising) there's a lot of emotions flying round. I am very wary of the 19th July, something does not seem right and it almost feels like societal suicide, an "if you die, it's your problem" from our government. Excuse me, that was very dark and cynical. Even so, this means the return of gigs and festivals! Whilst this is a great thing for the live events industry, I know I'll be reluctant to go to a gig within the next two months at least. It's all very anxiety inducing for sure, but there is plenty of awesome music flying about that can without a doubt ease the nerves. In the early stages of the latter hal

Lemmy: The Definitive Biography - Mick Wall

Released: 14th April 2016 Synopsis (Goodreads): " In 'The Ace of Spades', Motรถrhead's most famous song, Lemmy, the born-to-lose, live-to-win frontman of the band sang, 'I don't want to live forever'. Yet as he told his friend of 35 years, former PR and biographer Mick Wall, 'Actually, I want to go the day before forever. To avoid the rush...'. This is his strange but true story. Brutally frank, painfully funny, wincingly sad, and always beautifully told, LEMMY: THE DEFINITIVE BIOGRAPHY is the story of the only rock'n'roller never to sell his soul for silver and gold, while keeping the devil, as he put it, 'very close to my side'. From school days growing up in North Wales, to first finding fame in the mid-60s with the Rockin' Vicars ('We were very big up north, I had a Zephyr 6'); from being Jimi Hendrix's personal roadie ('I would s

The last few years has brought us some of the most brutal, disgusting, vile and vicious sounding albums for a long time. Whilst the kings of the genre Cannibal Corpse are still tearing it up 30 years later, the underground is spewing up plenty of contenders to take their place. One of the bands at the forefront of this new death metal resurgence is Cerebral Rot, blending a bludgeoning mix of traditional death metal speed with bowel moving doom riffs, the band woke up and chose violence so to speak.  Excretion Of Mortality is th

The Fjordhammer Weekly Listening List (6th July 2021)

The Autumnal Vibes In July? It is a strange one at the moment, with the weather portraying more of an autumnal season and June flying by in an instant, 2021 seems to be reaching terminal velocity. Various strange and not always helpful energies are flying about for me, but they have shown me some things over the last couple of days that I still need to work on mental health wise. Caught up in a work loop I was losing time to myself and anyone who knows me knows I need that time otherwise I become a grumpy, stressed and anxious mess. Anyway, I have had a few rest days and started enjoying Mick Wall's Lemmy biography which I will probably end up doing a book review of, just like the Black Sabbath one I did way back. Now though, I feel refreshed and refocused as I know what I need to do to ensure that I don't burn out. Anyway, 2021 continues to be an awesome year for metal. With the new death metal resurgence, which stated a couple of years back, really coming into it's ow

Over the last 30 years Darkthrone has entertained us with an ever shifting and evolving sound that incorporates their black metal roots, doom influences and death metal beginnings. Whenever Darkthrone announce anything there is always a throng of hype surrounding the album, and given the band's limited use of singles, i.e. one ( Hate Cloak ), there was significantly more mystery this time round. As a result  Eternal Hails...... marks a very highly anticipated return of these metal legends. Following
