After being teased for six months by the band, we can finally indulge our lust for one of the world's most infamous bands with  Worthless Abominations Destroyed . For me, if this is the standard of the first single off of upcoming album  Daemon , then the standard has been set very high, and I am all aboard the hype train for this one! Musically, the sound is ver reminiscent of the band's 1997 EP Wolf's Lair Abyss . With the operatic vocal style o

Packed full of beautiful atmospheres blended with the best of Alcest's brand of black metal, Protection offers something melancholically soothing, progressive and intriguing. Alcest are an instantly recognisable band with a unique sound that few in this genre can match, after the success of 2016's Kodama there are big things expected of the band on  Spiritual Instinct . Musically, this is classic Alcest but a but more emphasis on the heavy, which is never a bad thing. The variety of heavy riffs is amazing in this song, melodic and

The Metal Scholar's Weekly Listening List (26th August 2019)

Image
My mum said I looked like Professor Snape... A new feature on Fjordhammer Music? Why yes indeed!  With 2019 being an absolute onslaught for album releases. Upon the realisation that I cannot review them all, no matter how much I want to, I have decided to put together my comprehensive list of what you should listen to and check out this week. From underground hidden gems to modern mega metal monoliths accompanied by vintage and ancient music from the depths of time, what ever albums or singles have made their mark on me that week. With a mixture of subgeneres from across the metal landscape, there should, in theory, be something here for everyone to enjoy! I want to mainly focus on songs and albums that I haven't reviewed but a couple of previously reviewed songs and albums may creep in, but I'll link them to the reviews. However, whilst I am no great teacher, there is no excuse for not doing your weekly metal assignments and missing out on the content provided in th

Rated 12th in Sputnik Music's Best Black Metal Albums of 2019 , I thought I'd give it a shot as I was primarily drawn in by the amazing medieval style cover art. Mixing the epic and melodic with the raw and ruthless elements of black metal  Par Le Sang Versé is an ambitious and adventurous album that reminds me very much of the Amercian band Obsequiae ( Aria of Vernal Tombs is a mu

The End Of Summer Is Nigh! As the nights have started drawing in and the temperature has dropped to a more considerate and functional state, I can finally start to look towards my favourite time of the year, autumn and the might winter! I have enjoyed the sun to some extent don't get me wrong, but nothing inspires me more than the creeping cold of winter through autumn and the changing of the leaves. It helps me channel all that musical witchcraft and creativity so that I'm able to throw myself into the writing process. In other words, its been a bit of an onslaught for album releases the last couple of weeks and I'm only now just beginning to catch up with them and hopefully move on to an artist feature or classic album post (the last one I did was about a month ago all about my favourite band Black Stone Cherry ). As I said in the heatwave edition my creativity has been stunted  by the impractical hot weather but that doesn't mean I've not been working away c
